As I prepare for the holidays, I am being intentional about eating healthy foods every day. I know that when Thanksgiving arrives, I might indulge and enjoy some of my favorite dishes. It’s important to allow yourself to indulge in one meal or treat without feeling guilty. It’s easy to stray from healthy eating, but if you plan what you will eat, it will make the celebration much more enjoyable while maintaining all the hard work you are doing!
Thanksgiving Tips!
- Eat: Avoid skipping meals and try to eat at your usual times. Eating a small, nutritious breakfast can help you feel more in control of your appetite.
- Be mindful of portions: Use a smaller plate to help you feel full.
- Make substitutions: When cooking, use low-fat milk or low-sodium broth, and reduce the amount of sugar and fat. Use fat-free yogurt instead of sour cream or mayo, or use fat-free chicken broth instead of gravy. Serve cauliflower rice instead white rice.
- Air fry: Skip the oil and use an air fryer to make meals
- Plate it up: Fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with starches, and a quarter with lean turkey. You can also add fruit to your vegetable half.
- Eat slowly: Chew your food thoroughly and put your utensil down between bites
- Stay hydrated: Drink water throughout the day, and have water between festive drinks.
- Move around: Take a walk after dinner, or play a game with family.
- Enjoy the moment: Try to be gracious with yourself and your loved ones, and don't let how much you eat determine your mood.
- Focus on family and friends: Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate your relationships with loved ones.
- Practice gratitude: Reflect on the blessings you have in your life.
