As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a wonderful opportunity to reflect on ways to embrace a healthier and more fulfilling life. Living a healthy lifestyle is about making small, positive choices each day that help us feel our best—physically, mentally, and emotionally. During this holiday season, let’s remember that practicing gratitude enhances our well-being, which can uplift our spirits and boost our overall health.

As I prepare for the holidays, I am being intentional about eating healthy foods every day. I know that when Thanksgiving arrives, I might indulge and enjoy some of my favorite dishes. It’s important to allow yourself to indulge in one meal or treat without feeling guilty. It’s easy to stray from healthy eating, but if you plan what you will eat, it will make the celebration much more enjoyable while maintaining all the hard work you are doing!

Thanksgiving Tips!

  • Eat: Avoid skipping meals and try to eat at your usual times. Eating a small, nutritious breakfast can help you feel more in control of your appetite. 
  • Be mindful of portionsUse a smaller plate to help you feel full. 
  • Make substitutionsWhen cooking, use low-fat milk or low-sodium broth, and reduce the amount of sugar and fat. Use fat-free yogurt instead of sour cream or mayo, or use fat-free chicken broth instead of gravy.  Serve cauliflower rice instead white rice.
  • Air frySkip the oil and use an air fryer to make meals
  • Plate it upFill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with starches, and a quarter with lean turkey. You can also add fruit to your vegetable half. 
  • Eat slowly: Chew your food thoroughly and put your utensil down between bites
  • Stay hydratedDrink water throughout the day, and have water between festive drinks. 
  • Move aroundTake a walk after dinner, or play a game with family. 
  • Enjoy the momentTry to be gracious with yourself and your loved ones, and don't let how much you eat determine your mood. 
  • Focus on family and friendsThanksgiving is a time to celebrate your relationships with loved ones. 
  • Practice gratitudeReflect on the blessings you have in your life.

 As we move into the cooler months, it’s the perfect time to embrace hearty, nutritious foods like squash. This versatile vegetable is not only packed with flavor but also loaded with health benefits that can support your wellness journey.

  • Varieties Galore-There are many types of squash, from butternut to acorn to spaghetti squash, each with unique flavors and nutrients.
  • Nutrient Powerhouse-Squash is high in fiber, vitamins A and C, potassium, and antioxidants, all of which support immune function, heart health, and digestion.

Healthy Squash Recipe: Roasted Butternut Squash with Herbs

Ingredients

1 medium butternut squash, peeled and cubed  

      - 2 tablespoons olive oil  

      - Salt and pepper, to taste  

      - Fresh rosemary and thyme, chopped  

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Toss the squash cubes with olive oil, salt, pepper, rosemary, and thyme in a bowl.
  3. Spread the squash on a baking sheet in an even layer.
  4. Roast for 25-30 minutes or until golden and tender, stirring halfway through.
